food prices
The price of wheat, rice and maize have nearly doubled in the past year - and they are not the only foodstuffs trading at a high price on the international commodity market. Things have got so bad that aid agencies are having to rethink their programmes. BBC News looks at why prices are rising and what can be done about it. What is going on? Prices are increasing sharply for some of the most basic foodstuffs traded on international commodity markets. The price of wheat has doubled in less than a year, while other staples such as corn, maize and soya are trading at well above their 1990s averages. Rice and coffee prices are running at 10-year highs, and in some countries, prices for milk and meat have more than doubled. Why are we seeing these increases now? It could be the breakdown of the "Goldilocks era" for global commodities - a period stretching back more than 30 years, during which the price of basic foodstuffs has been neither too high nor too low, but remained relatively constant. For most of this period, the cost of staples such as wheat, corn and soya has actually fallen in real terms. And food buffer stocks are at all-time lows as countries saw no need to accumulate them. But it seems this long period of stability is coming to an end. Most commentators believe we are on the cusp of a new era of volatility and rising prices which will last for some time to come. Who are the winners and losers? The main losers are poor people who live in cities in developing countries, who are facing higher prices for imported food on low incomes. Food riots from Haiti to Indonesia are causing increasing political instability. The World Bank says that the high price of food could lead to developing countries missing international poverty targets. The main gainers are farmers in rich and emerging market nations like the US, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and Australia, who are getting record prices for their harvests. Some poor farmers are also benefiting from higher prices. What are the main causes? The first reason why prices are rising is growth in the world's population, which is expected to top nine billion by the middle of the century. That is an incredible number of mouths to feed and will put pressure on a range of resources, including land, water and oil, as well as food supply. But lurking behind the headline figures for population is an even more significant factor pushing up prices, and that's the economic miracle driving emerging economies such China and India. To put it bluntly, rich people eat more than poor people, and all this economic growth is generating a whole new tier of middle-class consumers who buy more meat and processed food. The FAO estimates that processed food now accounts for 80% of food and beverage sales. What other factors are involved? There is also the added environmental pressure all these extra people are loading onto the planet, as well as the impact of climate change. Desertification is accelerating in China and sub-Saharan Africa, while more frequent flooding and changing patterns of rainfall are already beginning to have a significant impact on agricultural production. And global warming has played a significant role in another driver of rising prices: the shift in agricultural production from food to biofuels. Ethanol production is on course to account for some 30% of the US corn crop by 2010, dramatically curtailing the amount of land available for food crops and pushing up the price of corn flour on international commodity markets. What can be done about it? Many countries are subsidising the price of food, and the World Bank has called for targeted subsidies to help the poor. And the UN's World Food Programme needs another $500m (£250m) to make up the gap in emergency food aid. In the longer term, international aid agencies have called for more money to support food production in developing countries. So far, only a small part of foreign aid goes to help farmers, but the World Bank says it will double its assistance to African agriculture to $800m The food crisis is also likely to complicate the task of agreeing the next round of world trade talks, the Doha round, which is focused on agriculture. Agencies like Oxfam also want protection for small farmers in developing countries and agricultural marketing boards against the demand of the rich countries that they fully open their markets.http://trasfondo-

Caracas, 11 Abr. ABN.- Más de 100 países del mundo programaron movilizaciones de solidaridad y respaldo con el pueblo venezolano, luego de seis años del golpe de Estado de abril de 2002 y del retorno del sistema constitucional en el país, dijo este viernes el ministro del Poder Popular para las Relaciones Exteriores, Nicolás Maduro Moros. La información se dio a conocer por medio de un boletín de prensa emanado del despacho de Relaciones Exteriores. El canciller Maduro indicó que hombres y mujeres, estudiantes, profesores, trabajadores, campesinos, amas de casa, movimientos de mujeres, parlamentarios, gobernadores y alcaldes del mundo entero saldrán, junto a sus respectivos pueblos, en homenaje y solidaridad con Venezuela. “El mundo entero se va a movilizar en un gesto de amor, de apoyo a nuestro país”, afirmó Maduro. http://www.aporrea.org/venezuelaexterior/n112347.html

Fecha de publicación: 10/04/08 En un plenario sindical realizado el miércoles 09 de abril en Valencia, en donde participaron dirigentes sindicales de las empresas: Ford, MMC, Chrysler, General Motors, Vivex, Metalcar, Rudeveca, Gabriel, Covendisa, Afinia Filtros Wix, Mancusa, Mamusa, Dana Tuboauto, Ocimetalmecánica, Lear, Titán, Autotex, Dana Structural Solutions, Dana SH Fundiciones, además de discutir la situación por la que atraviesan los trabajadores de este sector y la arremetida patronal, se acordaron una serie de actividades en el marco de la concreción de la constitución de la federación que se llamará: Unión Nacional de Trabajadores del Sector Carrocero Autopartes y Automotriz UNTSCAA. Los dirigentes sindicales nos informaron acerca de algunas reuniones que se llevarán a cabo a partir de la próxima semana con las instituciones del gobierno en donde expondrán la situación desde su punto de vista, así como también una serie de propuestas que creen deben tomarse en cuenta para revertir la situación que como ellos mencionan: “es parte de de las presiones de los empresarios para flexibilizar el control de cambios y revertir la resolución que limita las exportaciones”. A la vez nos hicieron llegar un comunicado en donde reivindican la decisión del presidente Chávez de renacionalizar SIDOR, la cual dice textualmente: “Nosotros, los dirigentes sindicales de las empresas: Ford, MMC, Chrysler, General Motors, Toyota, Vivex, Metalcar, Rudeveca, Gabriel, Covendisa, Afinia Filtros Wix, Mancusa, Mamusa, Dana Tuboauto, Ocimetalmecánica, Lear, Titán, Autotex, Dana Structural Solutions, Dana SH Fundiciones, luego de conocer la decisión del presidente de la República Hugo Chávez Frías de renacionalizar Sidor, no podemos dejar de plegarnos al júbilo que embarga a los trabajadores siderúrgicos y a todo el pueblo de Guayana por tan importante decisión que se ajusta al clamor que nuestros hermanos de clase demandaban desde hace diez años, desde que el gobierno de Caldera, con la complacencia de la CTV y la dirigencia sindical de aquel momento, decidió privatizarla, lo que trajo consigo que Sidor se convirtiese en uno de los más crueles escenarios de sobreexplotación y desidia contra la clase trabajadora a cambio de inmensas ganancias a la explotación a uno de nuestros principales recursos como lo es el hierro. Aplaudimos que el presidente Chávez haya tomado la medida pues entendió que era el mejor momento, puesto que los trabajadores en el marco de la discusión de la convención colectiva que por culpa de la transnacional Ternium llevaba más de quince meses, demandaban con una excelente convicción, producto de su madurez política, como parte de la lucha de los Sidoristas de que Sidor volviera a ser de los venezolanos. Hoy no sólo concebimos que se concrete la renacionalización de Sidor como parte de las aspiraciones de los trabajadores Sidoristas, pues para nosotros los trabajadores de las empresas automotrices y de las autopartes recibimos esta medida y la celebramos como una de las más grandes conquistas de los trabajadores en medio del proceso revolucionario; algunos de nosotros estuvimos acompañándoles en algunas actividades en Guayana y pudimos sentir el calor de esta lucha y no debemos dejar de resaltar tanto el papel que jugó el comité ejecutivo del sindicato SUTISS, así como también los compañeros del comité de delegados, el comité de conflictos, los trabajadores con sus familiares, los sindicatos y todo el pueblo de Guayana. Pero para los que creen que no es posible la unificación de un instrumento de lucha de los trabajadores, quedó bien claro que cuando los trabajadores quieren pueden; por ello no vamos a dejar de mencionar el mérito de los compañeros de la Unión Nacional de Trabajadores; cuatro de las corrientes que hacen vida en ella estuvieron en el conflicto, muy distinto al papel que jugó la corriente que por ningún lado apareció y sólo se reflejó en la nefasta actuación del Ministro del Trabajo. Hoy nos queda la conquista histórica de los trabajadores y trabajadoras de Sidor como una gran lección y nos demarca el camino por donde los trabajadores y trabajadoras de Venezuela debemos transitar; el conflicto de Sidor es un ejemplo del papel a que el movimiento obrero, clasista, revolucionario, está llamado para asumir la vanguardia de nuestro proceso, con una plataforma unitaria de lucha consecuente y con identidad de clase autónomo e independiente para profundizar este proceso hasta llegar al Socialismo”. http://www.aporrea.org/endogeno/n112271.html

El sondeo del Instituto Venezolano de Análisis y Datos (IVEA) detalla que la aprobación incluye a quienes califican la gestión presidencial de excelente (14,7 por ciento), buena (29,4) y regular hacia buena (22,4), en tanto que el rechazo a quienes la tildan de pésima (9,8), mala (10,4) y regular hacia mala (10,8). La encuesta se basó en entrevistas directas a 1.200 adultos de todo el país entre el 24 de marzo y el 2 de abril pasados, aseguró la publicación sin revelar el margen de error. Los encuestados también identificaron la inseguridad ciudadana (69,5 por ciento) y la escasez de alimentos (38,8) como los dos principales problemas venezolanos, y al desempleo (28,3) y el costo de la vida (17,8) como el tercero y cuarto. El porcentaje de aprobación a Chávez reseñado por IVEA coincide con el apoyo de un 66 por ciento que reveló una encuesta anterior de la empresa Veneopsa, publicada el pasado 19 de marzo, y que principalmente aludió a su labor humanitaria en el conflicto armado colombiano. http://www.rebelion.org/noticia.php?id=65839

Anoche tuve un sueño muy extraño. Estaba hablando por teléfono con George W. Bush, diciéndole que si solo hablara con el Presidente Chávez, todo se pudiera resolver. Sabía que la honestidad, sinceridad, cariño y encanto de Chávez pudiera convencer hasta el diablo mismo. Lamentablemente, ese sueño está muy lejos de la realidad. En lugar de querer hablar con Chávez, Bush lo quiere colocar – con su país entero – en la lista de estados terroristas; clasificación que abrirá la puerta a la invocación unilateral de la Doctrina de Guerra Preventiva. A seis años del nefasto golpe de estado contra el Comandante Chávez y la revolución bolivariana, suenan los tambores de guerra desde Washington. En abril del 2002, Venezuela y el Presidente Chávez no figuraban en ninguna lista de amenazas, preocupaciones o peligros para Estados Unidos. Si, es cierto que estaban financiando partidos políticos, ONG, sindicatos y cámaras de comercio de la oposición a través de la NED. También promovían disidencia dentro de las fuerzas armadas y luego ayudaron ejecutar el golpe de abril. Fue después, en junio del 2002 que la USAID llegó al país y estableció su Oficina para las Inciativas hacia una Transición (OTI), con un presupuesto por encima de los diez millones de dólares para invertir y alimentar el creciente conflicto nacional. Y luego, asesoraron y apoyaron el sabotaje económico de diciembre 2002 que duró hasta febrero del 2003, causando mucho daño a la industria petrolero y la economía venezolana, pero que terminó reforzando la resistencia revolucionaria ante el golpismo fascista. Washington estaba siempre presente, aplaudiendo los esfuerzos de la oposición (bien financiados y planificados desde el seno imperial), pero aún no consideraba a Venezuela como una amenaza de algun nivel preocupante. Más bien, confiaban en sus aliados de siempre, aquel movimiento de la oligarquía venezolana que había ganado el avalo de Washington desde los tiempos del pacto de Punto Fijo. No fue realmente sino hasta después de que perdieron el referéndum revocatorio, entregando una victoria abrumadora a Chávez y la revolución, que los halcones y estrategos del norte se dieron cuenta que en Venezuela, había un problema. La oposición en la cual habían confiado tan ciegamente les había engañado. Ellos no tenían ni el apoyo de la mayoría ni la capacidad de derrotar al jefe de estado venezolano y su movimiento revolucionario. Todo lo que habían contado a Bush y sus socios era mentira. Condoleezza Rice, entonces Asesora de Seguridad Nacional, se dio cuenta del grave error que habían cometido, confiando tanto en un grupo de oligarcos resentidos que ni siquiera podrían lograr salir de Chávez después de golpes de estados, sabotajes económicos y hasta un revocatorio financiado por más de nueve millones de dólares de la NED y la USAID. Poco después, cuando Condoleezza asumió el cargo de Secretario de Estado, ella decidió tomar control de la situación. La confianza que Washington tenía en la fracasada oposición venezolana había permitido que Chávez creciera como un líder internacional. Había abierto la puerto a la llegada al poder de una cantidad preocupante de gobernantes socialistas e izquierdistas en América Latina. Había comenzado a seriamente amenazar la dominación de Estados Unidos en la región, y su control sobre la economía del hemisferio. Peor aún, con la guerra en Irak costando billones de dólares más de lo incialmente pensado, y tardando mucho tiempo más de lo anticipado, Washington y sus aliados estaban comenzando a preocuparse por las reservas petroleras a nivel internacional. No era entonces algo permisible dejar que la mayor cantidad de reservas petroleras en el mundo quedaban en manos de un jefe de estado socialista, anti-imperialista, Y quien estaba liderando un movimiento revolucionario por todo el continente; lugar además, considerado por Estados Unidos como su "patio trasero". La política de Condoleezza reorientó la estrategia de Washington hacia Venezuela. Fue ella quien por primera vez declaró a Chávez como "fuerza negativa en la región". Fue ella quien dirigió al Departamento de Estado clasificar a la Venezuela bajo Chávez como una amenaza a la seguridad de la región. Y fueron solo meses después que la CIA y el Pentágono siguieron sus pasos, colocando a Venezuela en una lista de "prioridades" para los equipos de inteligencia y defensa. El año siguente, con un Chávez reeligido por una mayoría aún más grande y el anuncio del "rumbo al socialismo del siglo XXI", Washington estaba agarrándose por los pelos. Ya Evo Morales había ganado la presidencia en Bolivia, y Ecuador iba en un camino parecido. En Argentina, Uruguay, Nicaragua – por donde miraban, los países de la región estaban liberándose de las cadenas imperiales y para Washington, todo indicaba que Chávez era el responsable (claro con un Fidel detrás guiándolo). Y es justamente en el 2006 que la Casa Blanca y el Departamento de Estado anuncian que Venezuela ha sido colocado en una lista de "países que no colaboran suficientemente con la lucha contra el terrorismo" – lista en la cual no hay otro país, por cierto - solo Venezuela. Era un "intermedio" entre un país amigo y un país enemigo. Era un aviso a Chávez y al pueblo venezolano, que si no cambiaran su rumbo, recibirán la ira del imperio. Vimos una primavera llena de maniobras militares, portaaviones, submarinos nucleares, destructores con misiles, y todo clase de nave de guerra de Estados Unidos y los países de la OTAN flotando por las costas venezolanas en un claro acto de intimidación. Luego, aumentó el intento de causar conflictos entre Venezuela y sus vecinos, primero con Curazao y las antillas nerlandesas, los cuales decían los medios internacionales que Chávez quería invadir y anexar. Después con el vecino país Guyana, circulaban rumores sobre una ocupación venezolana del territorio en reclamo entre los países. Y finalmente, en el 2007 y hasta principios del 2008 lograron agitar el conflicto entre Venezuela y Colombia, aunque debido al apoyo y razonamiento de las naciones latinoamericanos, esto tampoco resultó en cosa más grave. Sin embargo, estos "ensayos" de conflictos regionales, han dado la oportunidad a Estados Unidos aumentar su presencia militar en la región y convencer a la opinión pública internacional que Chávez es una causa de problemas. La guerra mediática esta más fuerte que nunca contra Venezuela y contra el Presidente Chávez en particular. La táctica de la "demonización del líder" esta siendo utilizado de manera sistemática en los medios de comunicación estadounidenses, europeos y latinoamericanos. A seis años del golpe contra Venezuela, la revolución y el Comandante Chávez, el propio Presidente Bush ha solicitado la posibilidad de colocar a Venezuela en la lista de estados terroristas. El Congreso de Estados Unidos esta promoviendo la aprobación de la Resolución 1049, la cual designa a Venezuela como un estado terrorista por su relación "estrecha" con las FARC y con los países de Cuba, Irán, Siria y Corea del Norte, quienes estan todos clasificados por Washington como terroristas. Esta clasificación auto-justificaría cualquier acción unilateral que Washington ejecuta contra Venezuela, sea una invasión militar, un acto de magnicidio o una ocupación de un territorio regional para "asegurar" los "intereses de Estados Unidos y sus aliados". El 28 de marzo de este año, el Comando de Operaciones Especiales del Departamento de Defensa de Estados Unidos inició la "Operación Libertad Duradera – Caribe y América Central", la cual no es ni maniobra militar ni un ejercicio ficticio. Es una operación militar verdadera que ha desplegado un batallón élite de 36 solados la Guardia Nacional de Estados Unidos y un equipo de combate, que incluye portaaviones, submarinos, aviones de combate, destructores con misiles, etc., para preparar la defensa y respuesta de Estados Unidos contra la amenaza del terrorismo en la región. A seis años del golpe fracasado contra la revolución, Washington intensifica su guerra contra Venezuela y sus aliados en la región. El 4 de mayo habrá un referéndum en Santa Cruz, Bolivia, promovido, financiado y avalado por Estados Unidos que busca crear una autonomía federal – un país independiente – en ese territorio rico en recursos naturales e ingresos económicos. El resultado de ese proceso afectaría todo el continente y abrirá la puerta a los infectuosos movimientos separatistas que buscan la desintegración de la unidad latínoamericano y la recuperación de la dominación imperial de Washington. A seis años del golpe, somos más fuertes, más unidos, más conscientes, pero muchísimo más amenazados. La urgencia de un bloque regional contra el imperialismo y contra la injerencia de Washington está más vigente y necesaria que nunca. Tanto como el pueblo venezolano salió hace seis años a las calles para rescatar su constitución, su democracia, su presidente y su revolución, hoy los pueblos de América Latina tienen que salir unidos a rechazar y derrotar la Guerra Imperial que se acerca como una tormenta mortal a las costas de la revolución continental. http://www.rebelion.org/noticia.php?id=65702
**** Caracas asumirá al menos el 60% del control accionario de las cementeras nacionalizadas El gobierno de Venezuela asumirá el control accionario al menos de 60 por ciento de las cementeras controladas por Cementos Mexicanos (Cemex), Lafarge de Francia y Holcim de Suiza, cuyas empresas podrán mantenerse en el país como socias minoritarias, informó el lunes el ministro de Energía y Petróleo, Rafael Ramírez. “Se va a abrir la posibilidad de llegar a acuerdos con las empresas para ir a un esquema de control, que puede ser como el que aplicamos en la industria petrolera, es decir, una participación accionaria del Estado como mínimo de 60 por ciento”, explicó Ramírez al salir de una reunión con representantes de Cemex, Lafarge y Holcim. El objetivo de la medida es “tener un control efectivo de las empresas y coordinar o hacer la estructura de gobierno de las empresas básicas del sector cementero”, señaló el funcionario. El también presidente de Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) y responsable del proceso de nacionalización de las cementeras anunció que las negociaciones se harán por medio del representante que designe la casa matriz de cada una de las firmas. El presidente venezolano, Hugo Chávez, anunció el jueves la nacionalización inmediata de las empresas cementeras en Venezuela, decisión que afecta principalmente a la mexicana Cemex, la tercera del mundo en este ramo, la francesa Lafarge y la suiza Holcim. México, Francia y Suiza reaccionaron el viernes a la decisión y solicitaron al gobierno de Venezuela que cualquier medida de expropiación debe ser ajustada a la ley y dar lugar a una indemnización rápida y adecuada. En Venezuela, Cemex tiene casi 50 por ciento de la producción, mientras Lafarge y Holcim cerca de 25 por ciento cada una. Las tres empresas controlan casi por completo el mercado cementero nacional y, según fuentes de la industria, tienen una capacidad instalada conjunta de 9.1 millones de toneladas métricas anuales. El gobierno del presidente Chávez nacionalizó el año pasado cuatro multimillonarios procesadores de crudo en la faja petrolífera del Orinoco, así como la telefónica CANTV, la principal empresa de telecomunicaciones, y dos firmas de electricidad en poder de grupos extranjeros. “Estamos seguros de que en muy poco tiempo podemos ir dando avances en la negociación con estas empresas, la cual vamos a hacer de manera bilateral con cada una”, expresó Ramírez. El gobierno mexicano apoya a la cementera en negociaciones En Monterrey, Nuevo León, el Grupo Cemex señaló su disposición al diálogo con las autoridades de Venezuela para encontrar una solución “mutuamente aceptable” para ambas partes, después de que el gobierno del presidente Hugo Chávez dio a conocer el esquema de control accionario de 60 por ciento de las firmas. A través de un comunicado, Cemex expuso que este lunes los ministros Rafael Ramírez, del Poder Popular de Energía y Petróleo; Rodolfo Sanz, ministro del Poder Popular para la Industria Básica y Minería; William Contreras, ministro del Poder Popular para las Industrias Ligeras y Comercio, y Edith Gómez, ministra del Poder Popular para la Vivienda y Hábitat, se reunieron con representantes de las empresas cementeras de Venezuela. Durante el encuentro, dijo Cemex, el ministro de Energía y Petróleo, Rafael Ramírez, comunicó a los representantes de la industria cementera la decisión del gobierno venezolano de controlar esta industria a través de un esquema donde el Estado tendría una participación al menos de 60 por ciento, con el control operativo y administrativo, aunque se podrían considerar otras opciones durante un periodo de negociación. “La intención del gobierno venezolano es llevar a cabo negociaciones con cada una de las empresas cementeras. Para ello se formarán equipos de trabajo de cada compañía, a fin de iniciar las conversaciones con el gobierno venezolano”, explicó la empresa que preside Lorenzo Zambrano. En tal sentido, dijo el corporativo con oficinas centrales en Monterrey, “Cemex manifiesta su disposición al diálogo con las autoridades para encontrar una solución mutuamente aceptable”. Asimismo, asentó que durante el periodo de negociación, Cemex continuará normalmente con sus operaciones, buscará en todo tiempo velar por los intereses de sus trabajadores “y confía en que cuenta con el apoyo de las autoridades para garantizar la seguridad de su personal y la integridad de sus instalaciones”. Reiteró que “siempre actuó con total apego a las leyes y regulaciones de Venezuela, y demostró ampliamente su compromiso con sus trabajadores y con el desarrollo del país a través de numerosas acciones en favor de las comunidades venezolanas”. El gobierno mexicano ha condenado fuertemente la posible toma de activos de Cemex en Venezuela, tras argumentar que no se estarían respetando los derechos de propiedad de ciudadanos mexicanos. Ayer difundió un comunicado de prensa donde afirma que “hará uso de todos los medios a su alcance para proteger los intereses legítimos de empresas mexicanas en el exterior”. En el caso de Cemex, asegura que “continuará con los contactos con las autoridades venezolanas” para apoyar a la cementera nacional durante el proceso de negociación, “en la construcción de una solución mutuamente satisfactoria”.

Imaginemos que el departamento de protección audiovisual de la infancia de México o de Perú requiriese a una televisión de su país el cambio de horario de la serie Los Simpson por no considerar adecuada su emisión en horario infantil. ¿Alguien se imaginaría medio centenar de titulares de prensa en medios hispanos del tipo de “Los mexicanos no podrán ver Los Simpson”, “Mexico prohibe la emisión de Los Simpson” o “A Calderón no le gustan Los Simpson”? Evidentemente es difícil pensar en decenas de medios titulando así. Ahora bien, si eso ocurre en Venezuela la cosa cambia. Esto encontramos en un vistazo a Google news:
Lo que
ha sucedido en Venezuela es que el organismo regulador denominado
Consejo de
Telecomunicaciones, tras recibir varias quejas ha determinado que en
aplicación
de la Ley de Responsabilidad Social en Radio y Televisión que prohíbe
los
"mensajes que atentan contra la formación integral de niños, niñas y
adolescentes", la serie los Simpson debía de abandonar el horario
infantil
en el que se emitía por la cadena de televisión Televen. Por tanto, son
falsos
todos los titulares anteriores: no se prohíben, no se impide su emisión
(sólo
se cambia de horario), no se vetan, los venezolanos los pueden seguir
viendo,
ni siquiera se le impide a los niños (pueden hacerlo fuera del horario
infantil), no sabemos si le gustan a Chávez o no, el presidente de ese
país no
ataca a ningunos dibujos animados ni los estrangula… La única censura
que han sufrido Los Simpson, fue de su propio canal estadounidense, Fox, que censuró
en un capítulo la frase "This sure is a lot like Iraq will be",
que podría traducirse como "Esto se parece mucho a como estará Iraq".
Hacían referencia a la imagen devastada de Springfield, la ciudad de
los Simpsons, que por lo visto ha sido atacada por los marcianos en una
guerra en la que la excusa es que tenían armas de "desintegración"
masiva.
Lo que ha sucedido en Venezuela es sólo que el Estado, a través de un organismo profesional, ha considerado que tenía que asumir la responsabilidad en que los contenidos de televisión en el horario infantil se ajusten a criterios pedagógicos y educativos para los niños. Podría haber ocurrido como en España, donde los medios no critican la política gubernamental porque no es ninguna. En España no se les exige nada, existe sólo un Código de Autorregulación que han creado las cadenas y que luego no lo cumplen. Un informe de la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos difundido en julio del pasado año denunciaba que las cadenas de televisión cometieron nada menos que 9.000 infracciones del código de la infancia en 14 semanas. “Las televisiones de ámbito estatal (TVE 1, Antena 3, Cuatro, Tele 5 y la Sexta) infringieron en tan sólo 14 semanas 9.000 veces el Código de Autorregulación sobre Contenidos Televisivos e Infancia”, señalaba el informe realizado por el Grupo de Investigación sobre Comunicación, Sociedad y Cultura (GICOMSOC) de la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. El trabajo analizó del 25 de septiembre al 31 de octubre y del 2 enero al 12 de abril, de lunes a viernes, las más de 1.400 horas de producción televisiva que emitieron esas cinco cadenas en horario infantil de protección reforzada (entre las ocho y las nueve de la mañana y entre las cinco y las ocho de la tarde). De estas 9.000 infracciones, la mitad (49%) correspondían a comportamiento social, seguidas de temática conflictiva (25%), violencia (20%) y sexo (6%). Las infracciones afectaban desde a las telenovelas a las series de televisión, incluidos los dibujos animados, y cita los ejemplos de de "Shin Chan" en Antena 3 "en el que el protagonista es un niño con comportamiento social inadecuado, lenguaje soez o actitudes sexistas, así como referencias sexuales constantes en todos y cada uno de sus capítulos”. También citan otros ejemplos de dibujos animados como "Bola de dragón" y "Pretty Cure", ambas del género manga. El gobierno se limitó a pedir a las televisiones que cumplan el código, que es lo mismo que autorizarles a seguir incumpliéndolo. Vale la pena el reportaje de El País del 26 de noviembre pasado "La telebasura devora a los niños", de María R. Sahuquillo y Rosario G. Gómez, donde se recuerda que "Peleas conyugales, infidelidades e insultos dominan la programación televisiva en horario infantil - Crecen las voces que exigen sanciones y un consejo supervisor". De hecho, alguna televisión tomó nota, como La Sexta, que en enero dejó de emitir "Padre de familia" al mediodía, según parece atendiendo a las masivas quejas que consideraban inadecuada la emisión de dicha serie en un horario tan al alcance de los niños. No es descabellado pensar que, con criterios educativos y pedagógicos, se pueda considerar la magnífica serie Los Simpson no apropiada para niños de siete años por la irreverencia de sus contenidos, cuya ironía no puede ser captada por los menores. Por cierto, el juego para Nintendo de los Simpson donde Homer no hace otra cosa que comer y caerse está recomendado para mayores de doce años por el fabricante. La página web especializada en los Simpson Rapids Simpson establece el género de la película como “Animación; Comedia. Clasificación por edades 'PG-13', no recomendada para menores de 13 años, por 'humor irrespetuoso e impertinente a lo largo de la película'”. Además, la
película
de Los Simpson fue
calificada para mayores de 13 años
en Estados Unidos, en Colombia fue clasificada para mayores de 7, en
Portugal y
Alemania para mayores de seis y en México la versión en inglés fue
clasificada
para mayores de 13 años. Nadie con un mínimo de criterio pedagógico
discute que la seria Los Simpson es para adultos. En cualquier caso, lo que se plantea es si creemos que un organismo regulador público gestionado por profesionales puede tener competencias para definir qué contenidos son aptos para el horario infantil o dejamos que las cadenas nos tomen el pelo estableciendo códigos de autorregulación que luego no cumplen para aparentar criterios éticos. quizás ni ese dilema existe en esos titulares, sólo
la necesidad de mentir una vez más para poder poner en la picota al
presidente de Venezuela Hugo Chávez. Por cierto, un país en el que como
revela Javier Adler os Simpsons no
debe desagradar tanto al gobierno cuando su Ministerio
de Cultura organizó un “cine foro para discutir y analizar la
película” de Los Simpson.

Peter Higgs, whose work gave his name to the elusive Higgs boson particle, said that he was more than 90 per cent certain it would be found within the next few years. The Higgs boson was the professor’s elegant 1964 solution to one of the great problems with the standard model of physics – how matter has mass and thus exists in a form that allows it to make stars, planets and people. He proposed that the universe is pervaded by an invisible field of bosons that consist of mass but little else. As particles move through this field, bosons effectively stick to some of them, making them more massive, while leaving others to pass unhindered. Photons, light particles that have no mass, are not affected by the Higgs field at all. The mysterious boson postulated by Professor Higgs, of the University of Edinburgh, has become so fundamental to physics that it is often nicknamed the “God particle”. After more than 40 years of research, and billions of pounds, scientists have yet to prove that it is real. But Professor Higgs, 78, now believes the search is nearly over. A new atom-smasher that will be switched on near Geneva later this year is virtually guaranteed to find it, he said. It is even possible that the critical evidence already exists, in data from an American experiment in Illinois that has yet to be analysed fully. Speaking after visiting Cern, the European particle physics laboratory that has built the £2.6 billion Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to find the Higgs boson, he praised the collaborative work behind the project, adding that such future work could be jeopardised by a funding crisis surrounding particle physics in Britain. The government agency responsible is being told to make £70 million in cuts, forcing Britain to withdraw from a project to build the successor to he LHC. “It looks like a major disaster in the funding of this kind of physics in the UK,” said Professor Higgs. “You are letting down your international partners, and what happens after that sort of thing is they don’t trust you any more. That’s even worse than the impact on the domestic users of this machine.” Tantalising glimpses of the boson from other, less powerful particle accelerators, have suggested that unequivocal evidence should emerge almost immediately when the LHC begins its experiments. The Higgs boson is hard to detect because it is hypothesised to exist only at very high energies, which last existed in nature in the moments after the Big Bang, hence the need for an atom smasher. The LHC will fire beams of protons around a 17-mile underground tunnel before these collide at close to the speed of light to release vast bursts of energy. Four vast caverns hold sophisticated detectors that will track the particles produced by the collisions. The largest, named Atlas, is buried in a space big enough to enclose the nave of Westminster Abbey. More than 70,000 people, including Professor Higgs, attended two open days at Cern at the weekend to see the LHC before its tunnels and experiment caverns are sealed. Professor Higgs last visited in 1987, before the LHC’s predecessor had even been built. If the LHC is successful, all that might then stand between him and a Nobel prize will be the mammoth task of interpreting the reams of data the collider will produce - which would fill a stack of compact discs 40 miles (65km) high every year. If all goes well, he hopes he will be celebrating by the time he turns 80 in May 2009. “My prejudice would certainly be, on the basis of the evidence we already have, that it’s not far off,” said the professor. “But there’s a lot of analysis of the data to be done before you make the announcement that you have found it. That’s what will take the time.” If he turns out to be right, “I will certainly open a bottle of something”, he said. If the boson is not found, however, “I should be very, very puzzled. FJTL. **** Fight to save Earth from tiny black hole A GIANT particle accelerator that mimics the effects of the Big Bang could destroy all life on Earth by sucking it into a black hole, a lawsuit claims. Walter Wagner, who runs a botanical garden on Hawaii's Big Island, and Luis Sancho of Spain have asked for an injunction to prevent the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) starting up its Large Hadron Collider. The accelerator, which will be the world's most powerful particle smasher, is due to begin hurling protons at each other at its base outside Geneva this northern summer. Physicists hope the device, which has taken 14 years and $8.7 billion to build, will provide clues to the universe's origins by mimicking its condition one trillionth of a second after the Big Bang. Although CERN scientists have already ruled out the possibility in a safety review, Mr Wagner and Mr Sancho say there is at least a small chance of annihilation of the planet and perhaps the universe. They claim CERN has under-played the chances the collider could produce a tiny black hole or a particle called a "killer strangelet" that would turn the Earth into a shrunken lump of "strange matter". Their lawsuit, filed in Federal District Court in Honolulu, seeks a temporary restraining order banning CERN from finishing the accelerator until it has produced a safety report and an environmental assessment. A spokesman for the research centre said the claims were "nonsense". "Much higher energy collisions than those at the [collider] occur in nature, because cosmic ray particles zip around our galaxy at close to the speed of light," he said. The announcement was made after Rodriguez met Executive Vice President, Ramon Carrizalez yesterday. The Labor Ministry had been pushing the union to hold a referendum among workers to end a deadlock reached during collective bargaining negotiations. According to the trade union leader, 3,238 of 3,300 workers have rejected the latest pay offer from Sidor and he says the goalposts have been moved with the involvement of President Chavez and the Executive Vice President. Rodriguez urges the government to consider nationalizing the iron and steel industry, alleging that they are strategic companies. The union also accuses the Sidor company of mistreating workers, pointing to 18 workers who have died because of alleged company negligence. During the meeting with the Vice President, the union suggested that 650 contract workers should be included in the collective deal. Labor Deputy Minister, Rafael Chacon has accused the Sutiss union of sabotaging the proposed referendum, insisting that workers should accept the company offer of 44 bolivares, even though it is below the 50 bolivares the union has been asking for. Reporting on labor disputes at Coca-Cola and the Prevenca construction company in Aragua, Chacon claims they are on their way to being solved. However, in the case of the Coca-Cola plant, Chacon says he fears fighting could break out between current workers and pensioners. The Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) is supporting President Chavez' call for a Patriotic Alliance and believes that the revolutionary Bolivarian process has currently reached a "higher qualitative stage." PCV leader, Pedro Eusse points out that the Patriotic Alliance will consist of the PCV, the majority United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Patria Para Todos (PPT), and the People's Electoral Party (MEP). The PCV, Eusse comments, has been pushing for such an alliance since 1999 and it means that all the factors supporting the process will come together organizationally. "The alliance will become the tool of the revolution and a strategic instance of political leadership ... it involves not only political parties but also social and revolutionary organizations." Eusse insists that the alliance is not an electoral ploy but an essential part of move towards collective leadership. As regards the choice of candidates for the regional elections this year, the PCV is against haste, stressing instead the priority of setting up programs and platforms with the people in each municipality and State. Eusse has welcomed President Chavez' intervention in the Sidor conflict, stating that subcontracting should cease because it is a neoliberal practice. On May 1, 2007, Chavez issued a decree banning subcontracting but there are still companies continuing the practice, Eusse complains, highlighting the positive approach of Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) which has absorbed more than 5,000 workers, hired by third parties. The National Executive has met presidents of cement transnationals, CEMEX, Holcim and Lafarge to explain its reasons for taking control over some basic companies to boost national development. Basic industries & Mining Minister Rodolfo Sanz, Light Industry & Trade Minister William Contreras, Habitat & Housing Minister Edith Gomez and Energy & Petroleum Minister Rafael Ramirez also attended the meeting. Afterwards, Ramirez stated that the three companies have shown that their disposition to go along with the process. The transnationals will appoint a representative to negotiate with a high-level government commission to establish the control scheme, which could be similar to that of the Orinoco oil belt joint ventures, namely state participation of 60% and 40% private capital. Negotiations will be bilateral, Ramirez continues, and he says he believes that in the short term the results will prove positive. Venezuela for several weeks now … and things are not being reported
outside as the soo-called 'professional' reporters should be doing,
especially reporters affiliated with the highly financed US and
European-based mass media outlets. ...
Much of what is going on in Venezuela now reminds me of the Venezuelan US-financed disinformation and manipulative media campaigns of 2001, 2002 and 2003, during which time the often-violent Venezuelan opposition (opposition to Chavez) tried their damnest to rid Venezuela of Chavez through economic and media sabotaged, aided in great part by the monies of the Venezuelan elite, their organizations (such as the CTV, Fedecamaras and the CEV) and, of course, the US government, through the National Endowment for Democracy and USAID. Why are these 'professionals' not reporting about the overt and public racist campaigns which are now taking place in Venezuela, especially through Globovision television station? If media campaigns such as these occurred in almost any country in the world today, the television stations involved would be summarily shut down and its producers and owners charged,, put to trial and possibly jailed. Why is it not being reported? There are so many issues going on at present in Venezuela … and among them, one which has had the opposition up in fake flames of unthinking and irrational rage. Of course, according to their own pro-US, pro-globalization, pro-UN, pro-WHO, pro-OAS, pro-WIPO, pro-capitalist and pro-exploitation-and-exclusion philosophy, they are being completely logical and intelligent and professional and educated and superior in their interpretation and understanding of the issue. The issue is education … more precisely, the proposed discussions on propossed changes to the primary school and secondary school education curriculum .. which are now up for consideration, revision and review by the public (before the Education Ministry implements any changes).
That is, instead of, as in western civilization, where children are taught to compete for better marks and where students are taught by segregating information and clumping that information into domains and levels which aim at creating individualistic minds (through the segregation and disconnection of information), Venezuela is now proposing a system whereby students, from the earliest of ages are taught to correlate, compare and analyse information from multiple domains of information simultaneaously, while the system itself would not be based on a competitive (meaning exclusive) academic structure (leading some children being 'better' than others). In addition, from a young age, children would be taught not only the empirical information (such as math, sciences, languages, etc.), but would be taught the material in direct relation to agricultural development, the trades, services, social structures, sports, the arts, political differences and ideologies, family life … and would include comparisons between conventional westernized hiistory (such as Columbus being a hero) and a more realistic view on history (such as Columbus was an invader and mass murderer of millions of innocent people) … and all this in conjunction to the present state of Venezuelan government and society and current events. Venezuelan local history would be taught in detail as well. Now, what do you think? Anyone with a thinking brain will realize that conventional westernized education (as exists in Venezuela at present) will lead to a society composed of conventional westernized structures, levels, exclusions and would include all human and social repercussions resulting from such as system. We can clearly see that the conventional and ever expanding western system of thought and structure has led to mass exploitation of the excluded, marginalization of the less knowledgeable (not meaning 'less intelligent'), the divisionalization of society as a whole (the poor and the wealthy and the other classes, the scientific community, the business community, etc.), the physical separation of human beings (slums versus gated communities), and the segregation involving who has more of something and who has less of something … with little consideration for the humanity in each of us. I was taught that Christopher Columbus was a hero … which I found out 40 yeears later, was a complete lie. Growing up in Canada, I was never taught that we had massacred, raped and kidnapped so many innocent Natives or that residential schools and Indian reserves existed. I was taught that we French and English had “settled†the lands … we were never taught that wee slaughtered millions in order to steal the lands. What a lie. Why? What Venezuela is proposing is that every child be given the opportunity to learn about, observe, analyse and experience the overall conditions around themselves and around the world in such a way that the child can little by little create his or her own way in life in a practical and positive fashion without feeling less important within society, while comparing facts to the lies that are traditionally taught through the western education system and its media. When I was in elementary school and high school I was hand picked to be in 'special programs' which involved simultaneous university studies. They all expected me to become a scientist or something. Since I had a great thirst for knowledge and a hard head, I studied everything I could. I loved it. Since mathematics and physics has always been two of my greatest interests, I just barged away and sucked it all in ... but I also had great interests in art and poetry and archaeology. They had me pass some tests and they wanted me to take up architecture in university … but instead, two weeks out of high school I went to live in the jungles of South America … and much later … I did mechanical engineering while I made my living as a painter. Finally, I never worked in engineering, but instead composed music and did investigation work and painted. But ... many years later, by accident, I found out that what I really would have loved to do as a living was to be a welder. I bought a welding machine … and loved it. That would have been the best thing for me to do in life (as a living) … but no teacher would have ever suggested that I take on such a 'lowly' profession. Get it? Now I write. The proposed changes to the Venezuelan educational system would have permitted someone such as myself, such as yourself, to head toward a way of making a living that would really have suited us. I could have been a happy welder, making a decent living, and could have built up my other happy interests around my happy livelihood. (My first wife wouldn't have run off with another man either!). I believe that if everyone had had such an opportunity, life today would be more peaceful and pleasant for most of us. There would be a whole lot less people taking anti-depressants (but that isn't very convenient for the pharmaceutical industry), less people would be committing suicide and there would be millions less unhappy workers, alcoholics, drug addicts and divorces (but that is not good for the economy!) … overall … a much mo more humane, productive, pleasant, yet less-profitable society. Tragedy is profit. Peace is not! How many taxi drivers do you know who were once engineers, doctors, accountants, or other professionals? I know lots. Now ... here is the crux... Venezuela's most anti-Chavez and racist television station (watched daily by most opposition people) just made a several-minute TV clip where they ask, "On Monday (Tuesday, etc.), when your child comes back from school, what will she say they have learned?" The answers range from ridiculous things such as having done military drills to having learned how to be 'farmers' and having learned to 'share' with others, to learning that certain Black and Native historical figures are also Venezuelan heroes (versus the traditional white heroes which are taught about today). Every aspect of this clip is overtly condescending, as if a farmer is less than a doctor, that a white is superior to a Black or a Native, and that sharing is not a good policy for it inhibits individualism and competitiveness. It is perhaps the most racist and classist thing which I have ever seen produced by Globovision ... except for the time when they were making fun of Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe, saying that he looked like someone from 'The Planet of the Apes.'

President Chavez now has the opportunity to dialogue directly with Bernabake and Jean Claude Trichet ... talking to George W. Bush or any other "world leader" is obviously a waste of time. Configuring an ecologically-economic system with oil prices at around $150 a barrel will be the best recipe to curb climate warming and the green house effect ... it is also a wise way to transfer wealth from the very rich to the very poor ... and it is just the medicine to heal most of our insanity. The crashing US dollar is not good for the rising Euro ... it will surely perform miracles for China and India but it will do a lot damage too since India is bursting with over-population and over-pollution just as much as China ... inequalities are on the rise! The disparity between European populations and the rest of the world are engendering fear, ugly nationalism and the prospect of World War III. Uribe's plans are no diferent than Washingtons doctrine which itself is no less than world domination. We all know that after Iraq, it is Iran, then China and later Russia ... just analyze the latest worldwide news and the games they play. VHeadline's Washington D.C.-based commentarist Chris Herz writes: Iraq is for our wonderful corporate empire either a tactical defeat or perhaps at best a pyrrhic victory: So costly in terms of blood and treasure that even some of the establishment wonks now describe it as the greatest blunder in our history. And its author, President George W. Bush is often called in these same circles the worst president in our history. All this may be true or not; as you please. What is a fact, an astonishing fact, is that in utter despite of the disaster the major thrusts of US policy are still regarded as immutable. No domestic movement or political bloc of any significance seeks to challenge policy at its basic level. And that is the use of aggressive military power to achieve global dominance for the corporate state. There are very cogent reasons which explain why this must be so. Gone are the days when the USA could exist as a normal nation, attracting the cooperation of other nations by trade and commerce. These things have now been yielded up to East Asian or European manufacturers. Other than military aviation and agricultural products the USA possess or produce little of use to other nations that cannot be obtained more cheaply elsewhere. Thus trade is not an option for the maintenance of our polity. For over two generations now our political economy has been based upon "military Keynesianism". That is to say the use of government purchases of military goods for the purpose of providing income for the well-connected and employment for their subordinates.
Similar results can be expected when the laws of economics produce here in the USA their inevitable effects. We live as a terminal cancer patient: The very drugs which keep us alive hasten our demise.
Whatever are the facts, in the imperial motherland all will be led to believe that US difficulties in Ibero-America can be traced to the axis Castro, Chavez, Correa, Ortega, Marulandra.
Our intelligentsia, and especially those in policy-making circles seem particularly vulnerable to such manipulation. The great reporter William L. Shirer wrote in the 1930's of the perversion of reason itself at the hands of Nazi propaganda -- its parroting by people who should have by reason of education easily seen through the thicket of verbiage to the lies upon which reposed the Goebbels line. This phenomenon is no less remarkable here in Washington, even to former participants such as Al Gore. These people in government and the think-tanks remain still unable and unwilling to challenge any of our national mythologies. Ramos says a close communication between the plenary chamber and the DEM and between the judicial committee and the DEM are key factors within the new judicial power. One of his first tasks will be to start the house move from the current building to a specially built area. The opposition is up in arms at news that former Attorney General Isaias Rodriguez will take over temporally from TSJ plenary chamber president, Luisa Estela Morales. At the moment Rodriguez is facing a concerted attack for his handling of the Anderson assassination case and it is emerging appears to be an intimidation campaign against prosecutors and judges with fugitives, such as El Pais publisher/editor, Patricia Poleo leading the cavalry charge. State prosecutor, Danilo Anderson was blown up in his car in November 2004. United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) electoral committee president, Willian Lara has started work by visiting the National Elections Committee (CNE), handing over a list of members and requesting the recognition of the political party's initials. Today, the PSUV will undertake an exploratory meeting to set up a strategic alliance with other parties of the revolution and to make some important decisions on the matter. Lara says said alliance is not an electoral objective but part of the party's program, as is selecting names of candidates for this year's regional elections. National Assembly (AN) energy and mines committee president, Angel Rodriguez says the AN will pass the first reading of the law of taxes on extraordinary prices in the international market of hydrocarbons. This tax, Rodriguez points out, will apply only if oil passes the $70 mark. If the price is equal or less than $100, 50% of the difference between prices and $70 will be calculated, whereas if the price is greater than $100, 60% of the difference between the actual price and $100 will be applied. The law project proposes to use the Brent crude price as reference point in implementing tax calculations. The barrel reference is 42 gallons because it is the most commonly used in the oil market. The idea of the tax, Rodriguez states, comes from the fact that oil company profits are excessive and surpass reasonable levels of profitability. The increase of oil prices on the international market, he argues, has made it necessary for the government to review additional income that benefits the State, a fact, he hastens to add, that does not mean that private companies will not obtain their normal profits. In an update on drug seizures this year, Anti-Drugs National Office (ONA) director, Nestor Reverol says 8,500 kg of assorted drugs have been seized in Venezuela so far. The most recent success was last Tuesday's seizure in Barcelona, eastern Venezuela where the National Guard (GN) got hold of almost 700 kg of cocaine. As for arrests this year, Reverol puts the number at 1,556 Venezuelans and 77 foreigners, pointing out that among those arrested are a dozen or so state officials. Finance Minister Mario Isea has announced that the government is studying the possibility of issuing so-called cooperative bonds for importers in its fight to weaken the power of the parallel dollar market. The Minister rejects charges that the government is thinking of setting up a dual exchange system. The measure is expected take the bite out of the parallel market which importers use to obtain dollars. The importing companies that will benefit from the bond issue will be those dealing in food, machinery and medicines. The Minister did not give any time-date or details about how the emission will be undertaken, except to confirm that the bonds will be issued in dollars and paid out in bolivares. The reaction among economists has been mixed. Stock exchange analyst, Jose Luis Parra comments that although the Minister was very emphatic about not creating a dual exchange system, any issue of bonds will automatically set up an implicit market price for the dollar. However, he does admit that the bonds will ease up the market and make it easier for the import sector. Patrick J. The Venezuelan government has replied to Colombia "thank you, but no thank you" for documents, apparently rescued from the laptop of slain Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) leader, Raul Reyes. In an official communique, Venezuela's Foreign Ministry has announced the return of the documentation received last Friday, stating that it does not recognize any of the documents contained in the diplomatic pouch, adding firmly and clearly that the use of the documents by Colombia and the USA to slander President Chavez and his government will only strain relations between the two neighbors even more and is far removed from the environment of respect that the Venezuelan government is trying to rebuild. The Ministry considers what has been sent as a series of unintelligible and an understandable writings which have been used by unscrupulous media agencies against the Venezuelan President and government. Meanwhile, it is believed that the Venezuelan government is involved with the French in securing the latest initiative to secure the safe release of French-Colombian hostage, Ingrid Betancourt. French President Nicholas Sarkozy has announced that the humanitarian mission has already begun with the sending of representatives from the French, Spanish and Swiss governments to Colombia to talk with the FARC. It has called on the Colombian government to clear the evacuation zone of Colombian army troops and maneuvers. According to Agriculture & Lands Minister Elias Jaua, the El Frio farm in Apure State will become a socialist production state unity and be subject to programs of environmental preservation started by a biological station, currently covering 60,000 ha. The Minister says there is sufficient elements to argue that the farm is fallow land belonging to the State and the number of animals are far less than should be according to capacity of production on the lands. However, the Minister does recognize the effort made by the private company, Inversiones Venezolanas Ganaderos (Invega) in preservation work over many years and has offered it to continue taking part in the administration of the farm but under the tutelage of the Venezuelan State. Jaua proclaims that farm workers can remain working, be paid by the State and enjoy just conditions. The recovery of the lands will be supported by the National Guard and government officials but the Minister insists that the government wants to reach an agreement with the private company, which had hoped to continue running the ecological part of the farm, while handing over the rest to the government for exploitation. Executive Vice President, Ramon Carrizalez has stopped building work on the La Carlota airport in central Caracas. The measure comes after the government decided to review plans to develop the only airport inside the city of Caracas. Carrizalez will hold meetings with Culture Minister, Francisco Sesto and Housing Minister, Edith Gomez, as well as other sectors involved in infrastructure work taking place in the area. At the moment, there is a house-building program in place. There are sectors who argue that the airport should continue to be used for aviation purposes, given the fact that emergency situations could take place any time requiring evacuation or arrival of vital aid. Attorney General, Luisa Ortega Diaz says there is no legal figure that will allow a complete new start to the investigation into the assassination of state prosecutor, Danilo Anderson. The remark comes after the lawyer and state prosecutor, Hernando Contreras called for the annulling the whole legal procedure, accusing former Attorney General Isaias Rodriguez of not conducting a proper investigation. Ortega Diaz points out that Contreras should be well aware of the law. Contreras' turn-around and attack has caused widespread surprise and suspicion. It would appear that Contreras is currently convalescing since December 2007 and Ortega Diaz contends that he has not been removed from his job. Summarizing the investigation so far, the Attorney General maintains that there has never been any talk of nullity and that even during oral and public hearings, the involvement of the material authors of the crime has been demonstrated. As for doubts about the legal acts, Ortega Diaz confirms that they will be looked into. Furthermore, she insists that Contreras has not met with her, much less reported or updated her on the case. Contreras's own performance during investigations will come under scrutiny, it has been revealed. Ortega Diaz admits that some prosecutors have been removed during the course of the investigation but she refused to give expound further for confidentiality reasons. Five employees of the Venezuelan Institute of Social Security (IVSS) have been charged with acts of corruption and have been remanded in custody. 11th control judge, Shelley Bravo ordered the arrest. IVSS purchases and acquisitions director, Nagdaly Romero, engineer in charge of coordination, Hector Coello, Carlos Omar Salazar, Josefa Medina Rosales and Carmen Zoraida Villarroel stand accused of asking contractors and salesmen for commissions of 25 to 50%. According to IVSS president, Lt. Colonel Carlos Rotondaro, three of the accused were caught in fraganti squeezing a businessman for 100 million bolivares. Education Minister, Adan Chavez insists that the government is ready to hear and heed suggestions regarding the proposed school curriculum that the government intends to implement. The Minister denies charges that the government is trying to introduce the failed constitutional reform into the curriculum by stealth. The opposition is using the argument, Chavez insists, because the document mentions territorial geometry, which has nothing to do with the new geometry of power as proposed in the constitutional reform ... "we have said so to teachers." The Minister made the statement during an interview on VTV State television. Chavez reports that the document is under review with the aim of improving the proposal and if necessary, some things will be changed, not because they annoy a certain sector of the opposition but because of suggestions made in workshops with teachers. The Catholic Educators Association, (AVEC) has announced that it will only accept what is in accordance with the current Venezuelan Constitution based on democratic principles, freedom of thought and the fundamental principles of the Catholic faith. AVEC vice- president, Maritza Tovar has highlighted the fact that AVEC agrees with many aspects of the proposal and brushes aside criticism from other sectors that the organization is seeking an agreement because it receives State subsidies.
