Dates:
Born: July 8, 1885 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Germany
Died: August 4, 1977 in Tubingen, Germany
Biography:
Ernst Bloch was a Marxist philosopher who was born in Ludwigshafen,
Germany, and taught at the University of Leipzig until Hitler came to
power. At first he fled to Switzerland but he later emigrated to the
United States, where he would write two of the three volumes in his
principal work, Das Prinzip Hoffnung (The Principle
of Hope). In these three books Bloch emphasized the role of hope as
an important
human drive.
In 1948 Bloch
returned to teach at Leipzig, which was now in Eastern
Germany. Unfortunately for Bloch, even though he was a Marxist, his
outspoken opinions about society and economics brought him disfavor
from the ruling communists. He was eventually prohibited from
publishing anything and, in 1961, he defected to West Germany, where he
became a professor at the University of Tübingen.

Breves datos biográficos
Bloch, Ernst
(Ludwigshafen,
anterioridad (Derecho natural y dignidad humana, 1961; El

ERNST
BLOCH

I
arrived in
Germany in September, 1962; attended the Tübinger University
as from the WS 1962/3, studying Philosophy, English and German. At
that time, I became interested in Marx, Engels, Lenin & Trotsky. I
heard about
the Berlin Wall, and that a famous Marxist, German philosopher had fled
from East Germany to
Tübingen, and was teaching at the university there.
Immediately
I
inscribed in his lectures and advanced philosophy seminar,
listening to his "Tübinger Introduction to Philosophy", his
Principle of
Hope, and "Hegel: Subject-Object". In the evening after classes, we all
went
to a pub, where Bloch, together with his wife, Karola, and his students
continued the discussions; the 80-year old Bloch clouding the room,
enjoying
smoking his pipe, wisely listening patiently to all the questions and
remarks
of the young students.
Meanwhile, together with a friend, Irmgard Bolle, we founded the Neville Alexander Committee, to help political prisoners in South Africa. In 1963, Bloch read about it in the newspaper, and in one of our philosophy classes for the first time spoke directly to me, asking me to explain the current apartheid system in South Africa.
Ever since, although I rarely said too much in the class, there was a silent comradely affinity between us. Of course, when I had to present a paper on Marx's sentence: "It is not sufficient that thought must approximate reality, reality itself must approximate thought", then, we really had a lively discussion on revolutionary praxis and theory.
Always, Bloch would ask for information about the South African comrades, and regularly contributed to the expenses of the court cases, and to keep the starving families alive.
His seminar and classes were always packed, and one had to reserve a seat two hours before, because thousands attended his main lectures. I had an old tape recorder, and began to tape his lectures; he was very happy, and asked Irmgard to transcribe the texts, what later revised and corrected became the famous "Tübinger Einleitung"; also the lectures on "Schopenhauer".
Originally, I wanted him to be my tutor for my Ph.D. thesis; he, however, due to his age, and because he was a professor emeritus, explained to me that it was not possible. All his lectures, I attended, all his radio and TV interviews I recorded; unfortunately, due to my odyssey across the planet, they all got lost in Frankfurt, including all his books, that had personal dedications.
In 1966, I left to study at the Unniversity of Frankfurt, to attend classes of Horkheimer, Adorno, Habermas and Fetcher, but I still followed his publications and lectures across Germany. In 1972, when the German government wanted to expel me to fascist South Africa, he was one of those that signed a protest letter. Later, in 1977, while teaching at the University of Guyana, on the Deutsche Welle, I heard that he had passed away silently in his chair, listening to his favourite symphony. At that moment, I remember what he said in an interview once. He was asked what he still expected of the future.
He
replied, that
he expected that he would still enjoy
his pipe and tobacco. And when
the end was near, he anxiously would be awaiting the moment to
experience, what exactly
"Nothing" or "Nothingness" were all about.
Well, one of his
humble, shy
students
is now investigating that very Nothing, that multifarious nothingness
within a
new trialogics.
Below, we publish an academic reference that he gave to accompany me
during my arduous
political journey throughout revolutionary life.

In 1962,
Franz J.T. Lee came from South Africa as a scholarship holder to study
political science and philosophy at the University of Tübingen. Until
the
summer term of 1965, he attended several of my main seminars in the
subject
philosophy, particularly political theory.
Despite the
fact that, as a South African, he had to learn the German language
first and
also get familiar with the German university procedures, he acquired
well-founded knowledge in the realm of political philosophy, political
economy
and history in a short span of time, elaborated very good seminar
papers and
was a committed participant in debates.
His
scientific works reflected his determined support of the
underprivileged of the
whole world, especially of the “Third World”.
The
particular circumstance that Franz Lee has come from experience, that
is,
practice, to theory (as can be seen in his latest publications, “South
Africa
at the eve of Social Revolution?” and “Technical Intelligentzia and
Class
Struggle”), and not the other way round, turned out to be a great
advantage for
the treatment of problems dealt with by social and political science.
What
characterizes his work is, that he always pays tribute to the
transformation of
theory into practice, whereby the separation of the two phenomena is
being
overcome.
Franz Lee
is a critical scientist, whose carreer I´ve been following since a
decade. I
can testify to his qualification as a political scientist and his
pedagogical
faculties for the position of a university professor.

The astonishing, horrifying, and sickening inhumanity of US imperialism (1)
VHeadline.com's Houston-based commentarist Arthur Shaw writes: The astonishing, horrifying, and sickening inhumanity of US imperialism ... which some middle class and "omniscient" intellectuals claim no longer exists ... was made evident by the publication on October 11 of a study by the School of Public Health of John Hopkins University and Al Mustansiriya University in Baghdad on the cost of the vile US aggression against people of Iraq, in terms of the lost of human life.
The University is extremely precise in the above formulation of the chief finding of the study. The study subtracts the pre-war mortality rate from the war mortality rate to get the cost, so far, of the despicable US aggression against Iraq in terms of the lost of human life during the course of the war which is based entirely on US lies. Naturally, US reactionaries immediately denounced the study for "grossly over-counting" the number of Iraqi casualties.
These hasty denunciations of the study cannot be taken seriously because a large segment of US reactionaries are rightwing "rednecks" ... that is, the conservative and bloodthirsty trash, scum, and garbage of the US society.
The rightwing of the "redneck" population in the USA is an important demographic pool from which many of the torturers, murderers, and kidnappers in US military uniforms, as well as US mercenaries, are recruited. We should note that some "rednecks" are not rightwing. Some are independents and even liberals. But we can count these "anomalies" on one hand.
The importance of the role of Al Mustansiriya University in Baghdad in the conduct of the study cannot be overstated because the data on which the findings of the study rest was collected on the spot in Iraq. The rightwing "rednecks" and other rabid US conservatives, on the other hand, who denounce the study collect their data, if any, for their ignorant opinions in their mobile homes parked in trashy trailer parks, by watching the slanted "news" aired in the US capitalist media, mostly the flagrantly pro-imperialist Fox News.
"The estimates were derived from a nationwide household survey of 1,849 households throughout Iraq conducted between May and July 2006. The results are consistent with the findings of an October 2004 study of Iraq mortality conducted by the Hopkins researchers. Also, the findings closely reflect the increased mortality trends reported by other organizations that utilized passive methods of counting mortality, such as counting bodies in morgues or deaths reported by the news media. The study is published in the October 14, 2006, edition of the peer-reviewed scientific journal, The Lancet," the press release said.
The university, in the press release, speaks about the methodology used in the study and the coherence between the results of this study and earlier peer-reviewed work in the field. The mentioning of the "peer-review" seems intended to distinguish this study from the large mass lies and propaganda put out by over a hundred outfits, all on the Pentagon's payroll [more specifically the Defense Intelligence Agency], around the world, that contend, of late, that Iraqi casualties are somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000.
The sample size of 1,849 households is more than ample, given that Iraq has a population of about 26 million people, roughly the size of Venezuelan population. But, given the rate that the US dictatorship under George W. Bush and his GOP-loving rightwing "rednecks" are exterminating the Iraqi people, in the future, researchers will not have to survey so many households. The selection of "households," as a kind of cell or unit of research, rather than "individuals" as is the custom in much of the survey work in the USA demonstrates the impartiality of the John Hopkins and Al Mustansiriya investigators. The sample size of nationwide polls and surveys in the USA with a population of almost 300 million is often somewhere between 800 and 1,200 "individuals," some of whom reside in the same "household."
Again, the reactionary sector [about a third] of the US people, chiefly represented … at the lower levels … by the GOP-worshiping "rednednecks" have flooded the conservative radio talk shows with violent denunciations of the John Hopkins and Al Mustansiriya study. But these savage critics, unlike the researchers at John Hopkins and Al Mustansiriya, have not interviewed a single Iraqi household. These baseball cap -- sneakers -- T-shirt -- Bermuda shorts -- wearing trash of the trailer parks can't speak a word of Arabic or English. But ... and this a big but ... this trash can kidnap, torture and murder people.
The rightwing "rednecks" say they torture and murder people for their country.
"As we found with our previous survey, the majority of deaths in Iraq are due to violence although we also saw a small increase in deaths from non-violent causes, such as heart disease, cancer and chronic illness. Gunshots were the primary cause of violent deaths. To put these numbers in context, deaths are occurring in Iraq now at a rate more than three times that from before the invasion of March 2003, said Gilbert Burnham, MD, PhD, lead author of the study and co-director of the Bloomberg School Center for Refugee and Disaster Response. Our total estimate is much higher than other mortality estimates because we used a population-based, active method for collecting mortality information rather than passive methods that depend on counting bodies or tabulated media reports of violent deaths. Though the numbers differ, the trend in increasing numbers of deaths closely follows that measured by the U.S. Defense Department and the Iraq Body Count group," the University, in its press release, continues to discuss its methodology, stressing the difference between active and passive research methods."
"Here, the University returns to the key issue of whether "active" methods of counting dead people are more accurate and reliable than "passive" methods of counting them. 'Active' methods require that the researcher investigate, make inquiries, look into the problem, and digs up himself, by research, the data before he formulates a finding concerning the data. 'Passive' methods allow the researcher merely to ask somebody else what is the state of affairs with regard to whatever data happens to be available and then the researcher echoes or parrots what he hears from somebody else as the "finding" of "his research."
Gilbert Burham, the John Hopkins lead investigator for the study, cites two "passive" methods:
(1) asking the morgue or hospitals how many dead bodies came in and
(2) asking newspapers and other media how many deaths they reported.
With regard to (1) or asking the morgues or hospitals how many dead bodies came in, the Iraqi hospitals have been subjected to a vicious US terrorist campaign -- staff have been attacked by US marines, doctors have been shot, and emergency medicines blocked. Further, morgues and hospitals have been ordered by the ruling US authorities and the quisling Iraqi authorities under the US rulers to neither count nor report Iraqi casualties without the permission of the US dictatorship over Iraq. The cover-up of the magnitude of the US policy of mass extermination of the people of Iraq is pervasive within what is left of the health care system in Iraq.
'Passive'" method of research, relying on asking Iraqi morgues and hospitals how many bodies came in, is patently worthless and therefore completely acceptable to US reactionaries, rightwing "rednecks," and the senior officials of the Bush dictatorship.
With regard to (2) or asking newspapers and other media how many deaths they reported, this is more worthless than making inquiries at the morgues and hospitals. First of all, 80 journalists have been killed in Iraq since the USA began its war of aggression and extermination -- 20 so far in 2006, 22 in 2005, 24 in 2004 and 14 in 2003. In addition to journalists, 28 media support workers have been killed in Iraq after March 2003. Of the 80 dead journalists, 59 were Iraqis, 11 Europeans, 3 non-Iraq Arabs, 2 USAs, and 5 from all other countries. US armed forces have been implicated in 80% of these hits on journalists. But in every official inquiry, if any inquiry was held at all, the US troop(s), accused of killing a journalists without justification, walked ... usually claiming that the killing was a lamentable and unintended result of a "cross-fire." As a result, the whole of the US capitalist media working in Iraq and the greater part of the European capitalist media are little more than propaganda tools of the US military dictatorship that hides, to obtain legitimacy, behind a fake democracy of Iraqi quislings and traitors.
Only the most cynical scum, like George W. Bush and his top team, the mass of rightwing "rednecks" celebrating auto crashes at the racetrack and condemning the Dixie Chicks for their opposition to US aggression, and other hard-core GOPs will suggest that the absurd "passive" method of reading the lying capitalist press will uncover the results of the US strategy of mass extermination of human beings in Iraq.

The astonishing, horrifying, and sickening inhumanity of US imperialism (2)
Continued from...
http://www.vheadline.com/readnews.asp?id=69510
VHeadline.com's Houston-based commentarist Arthur Shaw writes: The presupposition that apparently underlies the preference for "passive" methods of counting the dead in Iraq is that members of the households know less about what has happened to their loved ones than other individuals who are under the absolute control of the US military dictatorship over Iraq.
The John Hopkins press release sums up all of the key findings of the report:
Key points of the study include:
The press release, in this passage, seems to try to fix operational responsibility or culpability for these 654,965 deaths in this list of findings. This list contains a small hint of an effort to assign responsibility for these deaths on the Iraqi patriots fighting foreign military occupation and political domination by the US regime and other dogs of imperialism, such as the regimes in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
The operational, moral and legal responsibility for the murder of 654,965 people lies squarely with George W. Bush, the mass murderer, who started these hostilities with a year-long propaganda campaign of lies about weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) in Iraq and about Iraqi complicity in 9/11.
The dirty lies of Mr. Bush and his GOP dictatorship in the USA about WMDs and 9/11 set into motion a process in which the current results were entirely foreseeable and about which many warned at the time, especially foreseeable was the high probability of massive Iraqi casualties if the dogs of imperialism, led by the US regime, invaded Iraq.
"The mortality survey used well-established and scientifically proven methods for measuring mortality and disease in populations. These same survey methods were used to measure mortality during conflicts in the Congo, Kosovo, Sudan and other regions. For the Iraq study, data were collected from 47 randomly selected clusters of 40 households each. At each household selected, trained Iraqi surveyors collected data on the number of births and deaths that occurred in the household between January 1, 2002, and June 30, 2006. To be considered a household member, the deceased had to have lived in the home at least three months prior to death. When interviewers asked to see a death certificate at households reporting a death, it was presented in 92 percent of instances. The survey recorded 1,474 births and 629 deaths among 12,801 people surveyed. The data were then applied to the 26.1 million Iraqis living in the survey area," the press release said.
Here, the John Hopkins press release returns to the methodological issues surrounding the report. That the answers of respondents to the interviewers were corroborated in 92 percent of the instances by the presentation of a death certificate greatly strengthens the study. These death certificates demonstrates that the hospitals and media, on which "passive" researchers rely, are flat-out lying about the number who have perished.
Since neither the US regime nor the big US capitalist media nor pro-imperialist academics have published an Iraqi body count based on scientifically proven methods of research, Dr. Gilbert Burnham knows that this regime, media, and academic mouthpieces have a limited range of options to attack the John Hopkins and Al Mustansiriya University study. This regime, this media, and these academic mouthpieces can either insist on the use of and the results from the discredited "passive" methods of counting the dead which exposes their rottenness or vigorously criticize the methodology that Burnham and his colleagues used in the conduct of their study. So, here, Burnham anticipates their deceitful objections.
"While the survey collected information on the manner of death, the study did not examine the circumstances of the death, such as whether the deceased was actively involved in armed combat, terrorism, criminal activity or caught in the middle of the conflict. The study outlines other limitations of the survey method, including the hazards of collecting data during a conflict," the John Hopkins press release said, here, backing off somewhat from the small hint, given earlier, that vaguely and mostly assigned some kind of responsibility for the 654,965 deaths on the heroic Iraqi patriots.
The language "the study outlines other limitations of the survey method, including the hazards of collecting data during a conflict" practically invites or, at least, challenges the big-mouth rightwing "rednecks" to go Iraq and conduct their own research if they doubt the results of the work of Burnham and his colleagues.
Fat chance. Rightwing "rednecks" and other GOPs only want to lift in the Iraqi body count, not measure it.
"The results from the new study closely match the finding of the group October 2004 mortality survey. The earlier study, also published in 'The Lancet,' estimated over 100,000 additional deaths from all causes had occurred in Iraq from March 2003 to August 2004. When data from the new study were examined, it estimated 112,000 deaths for the same time period of the 2004 study. The new survey also found that the number of deaths attributed to coalition forces had declined in 2006, though overall households attributed 31 percent of deaths to the coalition. Responsibility could not be attributed in 45% of the violent deaths. According to the researchers, the overall rate of mortality in Iraq since March 2003 is 13.3 deaths per 1,000 persons per year compared to 5.5 deaths per 1,000 persons per year prior to March 2003. This amounts to about 2.5% of Iraqi population having died as a consequence of the war. To put the 654,000 deaths in context with other conflicts, the authors note that during the Vietnam War an estimated 3 million civilians died overall; the Congo conflict was responsible for 3.8 million deaths; and recent estimates are that 200,000 have died in Darfur over the past 31 months," the press release said as it concludes.
Here, the John Hopkins press release returns to the issue of responsibility and introduces the fresh issue of the historical context of the US-instigated slaughter in Iraq. Here, the press release repeats that the Iraqis may be killing more Iraqis than the foreign dogs of imperialism who started these horrible hostilities. Interestingly, the press release, here, points out that US imperialism killed 3.8 million or inflicted over six times as many casualties in Vietnam. So, Iraq is hardly more than a melee for the bloodthirsty rightwing "rednecks" and other reactionaries of the USA.
A better way to put the US extermination of hundreds of thousands of human beings in Iraq in historical context is the add the 654,965 killed in Iraq to the number of human beings killed and starved to death in Afghanistan after the US attack, during a famine, in the fall of 2001.The resulting sum of casualties greatly exceeds a million people killed, as result of US imperialism, in only five years.
The thing that is stunning about the report is not its sophisticated methodology or its innuendos about responsibility for 654,965 dead people or the historical context in which it places the ongoing US-managed massacre in Iraq.
What is stunning is the conceptual framework under which the work was done. The report attempts and succeeds in making a reliable measurement of dead Iraqis, resulting from the US aggression, whether the dead were military or civilian (if military, whether the death was "in action" or "in an accident) and whether the dead were pro-imperialist or anti-imperialist or neither. Before this report, most of the earlier work sought to estimate just the dead civilians or just some of the dead soldiers or dead pro-imperialists or dead anti-imperialists. Laboring under these and other inappropriate conceptual constraints, misleading results and counts poured out in the vicinity of 30,000 to 60,000 "total" dead.
George W. Bush, responding to the study, said "It's not credible." It is the longstanding policy of the US regime to tell lies when faced with embarrassing reports. This policy is commonly called "plausible denial." In this case, the denial isn't plausible and Mr. Bush himself isn't credible.
Now, let's look at the response, so far, of the US people to the publication of the John Hopkins and Al Mustansiriya study.
Politically and ideologically the US people mostly divides into three huge sectors -- reactionaries, independents, and the so-called liberals, each accounting for about a third of the population.
The rightwing or the GOP reactionaries or the conservatives or, more correctly, the latter-day Nazi goose-steppers are outraged that the study blew the whistle on the evil in which the GOP regime is involved in Iraq. But, at the same time, these degenerates are rejoicing … exceedingly … ¤¦ over the heinous magnitude of the tragedy.
The independents feel a certain degree of uneasiness over the colossal magnitude of inhumanity that the US reactionaries have visited upon the people of Iraq because the independents are perceptive enough to ask themselves whether the US reactionaries ... wild dogs ... will someday turn on the US independents. But, in the main, the independents can look upon the plight of the Iraq people with indifference … not joy, like the US reactionaries … because the US independents are absolute self-seekers.
The US liberals come in many different degrees and their response is the hardest to describe. The response wavers between dismay to disbelief to righteous indignation to compassion to dishonor to whatever.
What I hear most from the liberals is the question "How could 'we' do this?"
My answer is "we" didn't ... they did!

Columbus Day: No racism without capitalism, no capitalism without racism
University
of Los Andes (ULA) professor Franz J. T. Lee writes: Two years ago, in an article "The transition
from Columbus Day to Indian Resistance Day ...,"
I wrote: "This big lie, this hoax ... about the 'discovery' of America
by Christopher Columbus, still infects the minds of millions in Latin
America. Columbus was not among the first to know that the earth
was round ... the ancient Mediterranean peoples already had this
knowledge. He
did not 'discover' America! Already
centuries before, the Africans had fleets that crossed the Atlantic and
they had a vivid, healthy, trans-cultural intercourse with the American
indigenous peoples. Their artifacts and traces of their ancient
cultures can be found all over Central America."
One of the basic elements of the misery and poverty of the Americas concerns race prejudice, racial discrimination, racism, apartheid.
In the meantime, the global order in severe crisis has changed itself to full recogniz-ability, it shows its true fascist grimace in the United States of America, Europe, the Middle East,, Colombia, and elsewhere.
From the Great Wall of China, to the Apartheid "color bar," the Bantustan "Homelands," to the "iron curtain," the Berlin Wall, to the Israeli Wall, to the coming Mexican Yankee Wall, that limits Bush's patriot "Homeland," we can trace this capitalist, imperialist bloody trails of racist fascism. That the "New World" was celebrating five centuries of the "Day of the Race" already shows how effective were "discovery," "Christian pacification" and genocidal militarization in America.
In the forward march of the Conquest of the continents of Asia, Africa and America, including the Caribbean, Oceania and elsewhere, the indigenous peoples were converted into slaves and wage-slaves; those that refused to be integrated into the European labor process preferred to die, and millions of the "native" peoples were just massacred in genocidal colonial wars.
This is what many Latin American states, excluding Venezuela, celebrate now.
It marks a dangerous low degree of transhistoric consciousness, completely outdated conceptions of history and a miserable social memory, the devastating reformist effects of a merciless ideological process of mind, thought and body control, of a physical and spiritual holocaust of hundreds of millions of enslaved, plundered and alienated peoples.
It is really time that we all wake up!
Also, it demonstrates the mortal effects of the religious onslaught of the Spanish Inquisition, the Dominican Order, Roman Catholicism, the Papacy and today the Vatican.
Not only were the poor serfs threatened by the "Second Death" in the Middle Ages, now Ratzinger is trying to rob us of our Limbo, where our un-baptized, innocent children, atomized by Bush's mother of all bombs, until now at least were resting in peace, and did not go straight to hell. Only Ratzinger and the devil know where Jesus Christ spent his last earthly stay between Golgotha and Ascension Day.
At least the Bolivarian Revolution is eliminating these cruel vestiges of ideological racism, of bamboozling continents with great lies. However, there is still very much to do. With Dark Age religion and bourgeois "revolutionary" ideology we will not eliminate the "Day of the Race."
The racial roots of "Columbus" go much deeper, they are blood-sucking us in all social spheres, in our inherited, colonial cultural structures. This venom has infiltrated our most sacred emotions, sentiments and daydreams, it captured our very souls.
Within the current world order, within its world market that was constructed on the Bermuda Triangle of Columbus, we will never be able to annihilate racial discrimination and racism. The fascist racism that we are experiencing in the current wars of the Bush administration is inherent in master-slave relations, in capitalism. Imperialism lives and dies with its racist heart beat.
There is no racism without capitalism ... no capitalism without racism.
Hence, Venezuela and therewith the Bolivarian Revolution, get down urgently to your historic task, forever to eradicate capitalism from the Latin American soil, from our hearts, minds and actions.

Chávez denuncia plan desestabilizador en Bolivia
|

Ruddy nació hace 39 años en Venezuela;

Israeli War on Lebanon: A Foreplay for the Rape of Iran By Dick Mazess Lebanon- Foreplay for the Rape of Iran The Attack on Lebanon: There is simply no question in the international press: the attacks on Lebanon by the Israeli armed forces constitute war crimes comparable or worse than those perpetrated by Nazi Germany on defenseless civilians (ex Belgium) in WWII. Amnesty International has documented the deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure, as well as attacks on civilians, and called for a war crimes investigation. [For more information see the follow articles: the Guardian and the New York Times] While Europeans are appalled, the Arab street is celebrating what they see as a successful military effort by Hizbullah against one of the world's best equipped and trained armies, essentially a division of the US armed forces but with far superior soldiers than ours. About 100-150 Hizbullah fighters were killed in the Israeli war on Lebanon, similar to the number of dead Israeli soldiers (officially 118 killed by enemy fire). The big difference is that 1200 Lebanese civilians were killed by Israeli shells and bombs, while only 30 or so Israeli civilians were killed by Hizbullah rockets. Hizbullah basically held Israel to a standoff despite the massive destruction of civilian infrastructure (bridges, hospitals, gas stations, factories, warehouses, apartment houses), the massacre of civilians, including those escaping from the south, and the creation of an ecological disaster. Villages in southern Lebanon were carpeted with US-made cluster bombs, which are basically anti-civilian weapons, and this was done even days immediately before the cease-fire. The true magnitude of the atrocity has been covered in the Israeli press, which documented the use of over a million cluster bombs, and white phosphorus, (both banned by international law) ; the US press has been silent until recently when hundreds of Lebanese civilians were killed or maimed. Several thousand Lebanese also are expected to die from the short-term effects of the destroyed infrastructure. Are there Winners and Losers? The Bush administration and the parroting US media, are perhaps the only sources who view the attack as a victory for Israel; because of media spin the American public supports Israel more than Europeans, who view the Israeli attack as much like the US attack on Iraq i.e. an illegal "preemptive" war. In contrast the Israeli public views the war as a defeat; the commanding general was replaced and the military leadership is under serious review. The Olmert government is likely to fall because, as the Jerusalem Post puts it, "There is a widespread perception that this war, by not producing a definitive outcome, has certainly not prevented the next war, and may have even laid the groundwork for it". A few days after a ceasefire was agreed to Israeli forces violated it by conducting an unsuccessful raid into Lebanon prompting a warning by Kofi Anan. One measure of the pro-Israel bias of the US media is its failure to note that last raid violated the agreed-upon UN ceasefire agreement! The Israeli assault on the civilian population and infrastructure of Lebanon has set back Islamic moderates everywhere by 20 years; it has strengthened the fundamentalists and exacerbated jihadist sentiments in Iran and Syria. One major blowback has been the promotion of Hizbullah (and of Iran) as the leadership of the Arab world, and the uniting of Moslems everywhere against the US "crusade" which officially deems them as "Islamic fascists". [Also see the New York Times]. The debacle in Lebanon, coming on the heels of the US wars on Afghanistan and Iraq, has launched Iran as the overwhelmingly dominant power in the mid-east. A major UK report points out that Iran has rapidly moved into the power vacuum created by the removal of the Taliban and the toppling of the Hussein regime. Hizbullah itself not only emerged the conflict more powerful than ever, but its rapid response to reconstruction and medical care of the injured has earned it widespread support from the previously uncommitted Shia population (according to Beirut resident Robert Fisk). A recent demonstration in Beirut brought out hundreds of thousands to celebrate the appearance of Hizbullah chief Shaikh Nasrallah. He claimed that Hizbullah now had more weaponry than before the conflict, despite attempts by Israel to prevent re-supply. Was the US Involved in the Attack? Seymour Hersh claimed that Washington did not directly
order
the Israeli attack on Lebanon but that the Bush administration had long
sought a military solution to Hizbullah forces since missile attacks on
Israel could be part of the retaliatory but that the US supplied both the armaments (precision bombs, cluster bombs, shells), intelligence intercepts, and satellite imaging of targets [see Information Clearing House]. Clearly the Israeli Defense Force is a major arm of the US military, with annual military financing of $3 to$4 billion and closely coordinates all activity with the US Department of Defense. The Message of Lebanon was a Warning to Iran Analysts and pundits have attempted to understand why there was such a disproportionate military response to the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers. Noam Chomsky discussed the attack in relation to a half-century of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The public rationale was response to the capture of two Israeli soldiers, but both sides have been capturing isolated individuals over the years and then arranging prisoner exchanges. The latest Hizbullah capture of soldiers was done to facilitate exchange for thousands of Lebanese captured and held long-term in Israeli "Guantánamos" without charge. The best possible explanation is that the massive retaliation was a warning to Iran of US intentions should it continue to disregard US concerns. Leaders in Israel, as well as US politicians, view Hizbullah as a branch of the Iran military just as leaders in the Moslem world view the Israeli forces as a branch of the US military. Both the Republican and the Democratic Party Support Attacks on Iran Both major parties have, for the last few decades, been the maidservants to AIPAC, the lobbying group of hawkish American Jews. There is obvious support for Israel, and against Iran, by Republicans but key Democrats also are hawkish. This is especially true for east coast politicians, and is obvious in the bellicose pronouncements of prominent senators, like Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton. However, even congressional opponents of the Iraq occupation, with rare exception, are unwilling to speak out against attacking Iran, and progressive lapdogs, like MoveOn are equally cowardly. The US House passed a bill in September 2006 supporting unilateral sanctions against Iran and those doing business with Iran even as the administration was seeking to refer the issue to the UN Security Council. On the other hand traditional power brokers are less enthusiastic about military meddling. The fact that the Middle East has become even more unstable than in the past has led the world elite (Trilateral Commission, Bilderberg Group, Council on Foreign Relations) to repudiate the neo-con preference for military solutions to political problems. The former president of Morgan Stanley called Israel's war on Lebanon a "catastrophe", and he asserts the Democrats made a "huge mistake" in backing the Republican administration's Israel policy. In his view "democracy" has become a codeword--and not a good codeword--in the Middle East.” Leading Democratic politicians supported the Israeli attack on Lebanon, just as they back the most odious of administration positions including: the continued occupation of Iraq, the "Patriot Act", torture of prisoners, repeal of habeas corpus, and military confrontation with Iran. A House resolution supporting the Israeli attack and condemning Hizbullah was approved with 410 for, 8 against (7 Democrats and Ron Paul), 4 present (including Kucinich), and 10 not-voting. Only 11 House Democrats voted against the invasion of Iraq in 2002. The leaders of the Democratic Party attempt to obscure their positions by claiming that the Bush administration is inept, and/or corrupt, and by calling for the resignation of its demonic leaders (Don Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales, Dennis Hastert et al) but they do not repudiate the policies. The Coming Attack on Iran There has been much concern that the joint US-Israeli attack on Lebanon is the first step to a wider war that would involve Iran and Syria, with one justification being Iran's refusal to terminate its program for nuclear power generation. The Iran story has been developing over the past six months and briefly became a prominent cause when it was leaked to the press that the administration was considering nuclear bombs to destroy underground installations in Iran. Noted expert James Bamford produced a detailed story on the possible attack on Iran. Only a few analysts believe more pragmatic voices will prevail. The Bush administration has been spreading the story that Iran is close to having nuclear weapons, a story reminiscent of the supposed WMD of Iraq, as a justification for a "preemptive" attack. Again, as in the case of Iraq, the misinformation stems from the Pentagon and the Vice-President’s office. The “story” is being amplified by the same propaganda machine. the administration used to create frenzy for the invasion of Iraq. There has been vocal opposition to the administration exaggerations about Iran, by both intelligence experts and UN inspectors. The International Atomic Energy Agency said a House report on Iran’s nuclear program was not only erroneous and misleading but “outrageous and dishonest” as well. As a consequence of the propaganda tirade against Iran two-thirds of the American public believes it is a threat not only to Israel but to the US. Even young adults, who generally view the Iraq occupation more adversely than older adults, also view the use of military force against Iran or North Korea as justified. As in the case of Iraq, the US public is being prepped for an attack based on Iranian intransigence. Time magazine actually ran a cover story on the potential US "preemptive attack". Retired air force colonel Sam Gardiner indicates that the first phase of the war would be intensive air raids lasting about five nights, but would be followed by a second wave of more extensive air raids as well as attempts at eliminating political and military leadership. Gardiner also outlines potential Iranian responses, and notes that US attacks could result in a fundamentalist overthrow in Pakistan. Former US Senator Gary Hart believes an attack on Iran will come as the October surprise that Karl Rove promised GOP insiders. Some evidence for a near-term war on Iran is the recent call up of "inactive" forces who have already served their maximum service-time. On October 1 Michel Chossudovsky produced a detailed summary of the military actions recently undertaken by US naval forces. The timetable well may be late October as two naval strike groups have been ordered to the Persian Gulf., and one is already there. Strike Force 8 (including the aircraft carrier Eisenhower with a full load of Cruise missiles) left from Norfolk, VA for arrival at Iran on Oct 21 Strike Group 5 group is sailing out of San Diego and the west coast; a Canadian ship is joining them. An October attack would rally the US public around the currently unpopular Republican Congress and undercut the hapless Democratic Party whose virtually only appeal is "anti-Bush". It would also undermine the attempt of Iran to establish its oil bourse, a move that would bring Iran an additional $10 billion in revenues, and that some think would help undermine the US dollar as the world reserve currency. The US invasion of Iraq took place in 2003 just as an Iraqi oil bourse based on the euro was being established. Will the Attack use Nuclear Weapons? The only question remaining is whether and to what extent nuclear bombs will be used. The excuse will be to destroy underground installations. Paul Craig Roberts opines that the nuclear option is required because the armed forces have in essence "lost the wars" (failed in establishing a stable occupation) in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The true rational will be to demonstrate to our adversaries that America will do whatever it takes to assert hegemony. Roberts states: "Neo-cons believe that a nuclear attack on Iran would have intimidating force throughout the Middle East and beyond. Iran would not dare retaliate, neo-cons believe, against US ships, US troops in Iraq, or use their missiles against oil facilities in the Middle East. Neo-cons have also concluded that a US nuclear strike on Iran would show the entire Muslim world that it is useless to resist America's will. Neo-cons say that even the most fanatical terrorists would realize the hopelessness of resisting US hegemony. The vast multitude of Muslims would realize that they have no recourse but to accept their fate". The use of atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima is considered by scholars to have been militarily unnecessary, but rather served as a warning to the Soviet Union. The paradoxical effect, however, was that it hastened the acquisition of nuclear weaponry by the Soviet Union and other nations. A nuclear attack on Iran would not only alienate European allies and make the US a pariah state but likely would stimulate nuclear proliferation worldwide. There are several groups that are organizing against US intervention, including: Stop War on Iraq, Campaign Iran, and Action Iran.

Battlestar Gallactica: Facing the question that EVERYONE ignores
By Jane Stillwater
Al-Jazeerah, October 9, 2006
I just got an e-mail from my friend George. "Jane you've just GOT to watch Battlestar Gallactica," he said. "It's probably the best show on television."
I wanna watch a wonderful show!
Since I became a blogger and the kids all moved out, I've been so busy blogging my heart out and playing computer solitaire that I keep forgetting to have a social life. But not to worry. The television has become my new best friend! When I missed an episode of "Men in Trees" the other day, I was really upset!
"But George," I e-mailed my friend back, "I can't afford cable and Battlestar Gallactica is on the sci-fi channel." Maybe the CW will start showing re-runs at 3 am? Maybe someone will download it on YouTube?
But George came to my rescue and told me the plot. "It's all about a country that gets occupied by a foreign power and the disastrous results -- insurgency, suicide bombers, the training of provisional police, puppet leaders, torture (one of the main characters from the previous seasons had his eye removed), indefinite detention, summary executions, etc. It was interesting to see the other side of being invaded and occupied. No one likes to be occupied and then to be told by the arrogant occupying force that it's for their own good."
That sounds like something I don't need to watch on the Sci-Fi channel. For that kind of entertainment, I can just turn on the evening news.
But speaking of The Future and sci-fi and all that, everyone in the world seems to be stolidly ignoring the biggest question facing Mankind. "What happens next?"
What EXACTLY is going to happen to us and our children and grandchildren after all the wars and occupations fail, the oil runs out, the globe heats up, the droughts come, pollution gives us all tuberculosis, we run out of food, the icebergs all melt, the oceans rise and cover most of the populated areas of the world, electricity fails and you can no longer get a decent strawberry milkshake? And my television no longer works?
Aha. That's an easy answer. That's why we have Jericho, The Survivor and Lost! It's a sad commentary on America's ability to think ahead that the only people who are actively addressing these problems today are television producers!
Guess I'd better start taking notes.
